A word about the series 'Ursine, Polar and Subaqeous':
When I started this series in 1990, I saw Polar Bears as the canaries in the coal mine.
While I did have a political purpose in painting them, a stronger drive at work was the desire to explore the innate lyricism of these beasts in their element, water - and by so doing demonstrate the tragedy of their conceivable doom.
It became an act of devotion, seeking out their essence and ultimately their joy.
I am not a 'wildlife painter' - I see these works almost as abstractions, distillations of the abstract beauty at the heart of nature.
